In January 2026, Vietnam separated its old fishing gear code into four distinct crab fishing gears based on target species and fishing gear: Fishery ID 13164, 13206, 13204, and 13205. After reviewing the documentation, supplementary information, and relevant data, the US determined that these four Vietnamese fishing gears are equivalent in effectiveness to the US management program. This is a positive sign for the Vietnamese crab industry, especially after the initial conclusion of the NMFS in August 2025 that placed the crab fishing gears of Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines in the group that did not meet the requirements of the MMPA.

Along with Vietnam, the crab fishing industries of Indonesia and Sri Lanka are also recognized as equivalent. Conversely, the Philippines is not recognized as equivalent for its related crab fishing industries. Therefore, crabs and products from these Philippine fishing industries will no longer be imported into the United States starting June 11, 2026, 30 days after the announcement is made.

Therefore, Vietnamese crabs exported to the United States in the near future will not require a COA (export will proceed as normal as before). However, businesses should note that if using imported raw materials, they must not use materials imported from prohibited fishing methods (those not recognized as equivalent) in the importing country. If using materials from other fishing methods, a COA from that country is required.

According to NOAA Fisheries, the comparability recognition for Vietnam is valid until December 31, 2029. However, the agency also noted that it may review or terminate the recognition if Vietnam's management program no longer meets the applicable conditions. NOAA recommends that Vietnam continue to maintain and strengthen efforts to reduce the risk of fatal or serious injury to marine mammals, including developing observer programs, electronic monitoring, and supporting the conservation of species such as the Irrawaddy dolphin.

​Vietfish is one of the annual seafood show and the largest in ASEAN. Until now, it has been attracting up to 2000 exhibitors as well as approximately 2 million visitors. In this exhibition, you will find:
